Paul Sebastian

Dr. Paul Sebastian is an Associate Professor of Spanish & TESL/Applied Linguistics and Director of the Undergraduate Teacher Education Program for World Languages at Appalachian State University's Department of Languages, Literatures & Cultures. His research explores the intersection of language and constructed environments—physical, virtual, and hybrid—with a focus on social semiotics and world language education. He holds an Ed.D. from Boise State University (2017), an M.A. from Brigham Young University (2012), and a B.A. from Idaho State University (2010).

His work emphasizes innovations in language learning spaces, including virtual exchanges, linguistic landscapes, and the evolution of language centers. Key projects include analyzing pandemic-era virtual exchanges and investigating Asturian linguistic resistance through spatial semiotics. Sebastian has presented at conferences such as ACTFL and IALLT, addressing topics like asynchronous dialogue in language education and 21st-century language center design.

His publications span journals like the Journal of Virtual Exchange and International Journal of Computer-Assisted Language Learning and Teaching, with a focus on technology-mediated language pedagogy and facility adaptation.
