Paul S. Sutter

Paul S. Sutter is a College Professor of Distinction specializing in U.S. and global environmental history at the University of Colorado. His work bridges environmental, social, and cultural dimensions of historical change, with a focus on North America and the broader Americas.

Education:

• B.A. in History from Hamilton College
• Ph.D. in History from the University of Kansas

Research focuses on wilderness preservation, public health, soil science, and colonial environmental policies. Notable works include Driven Wild (2002), Let Us Now Praise Famous Gullies (2015), and Pulling the Teeth of the Tropics (forthcoming 2025), which examines the environmental and public health dimensions of Panama Canal construction.
