Paul Gunnells is a Professor and Director of PhD Graduate Admissions in the Department of Mathematics and Statistics at the University of Massachusetts Amherst. He holds a Ph.D. from MIT (1994) and B.A. from Stanford University (1989). Research specializes in number theory with connections to representation theory and combinatorics.
Current teaching includes Math 411 (Abstract Algebra) and Math 714 (Arithmetic of Elliptic Curves). Research explores cohomology of arithmetic groups, Weyl group multiple Dirichlet series, and combinatorial structures in hyperbolic geometry. Supervised thesis on extracting logic programs from neural networks. Authored textbooks and problem collections for logic programming courses.
