About
Professor Paul Fowler is Chair in Translational Medical Sciences at the School of Medicine, Medical Sciences and Nutrition, University of Aberdeen. He has been with the University of Aberdeen's Institute of Medical Sciences since 2000, serving as its Director from 2015 to 2021. His research elucidates mechanisms regulating/dysregulating reproduction and development, with particular focus on environmental and lifestyle exposures including maternal smoking, obesity, and medication use.
Professor Fowler earned a BSc Hons (1982) and PhD (1986) in Zoology from the University of Aberdeen. His academic journey began in Obstetrics & Gynaecology before transitioning to the Institute of Medical Sciences in 2000.
His research spans reproductive biology, endocrine disruption, fetal development, and translational medical sciences. He primarily uses normal first and second trimester human fetuses to investigate how environmental factors disrupt fetal development and health. His work has resulted in over 170 peer-reviewed publications and book chapters, including significant findings on air pollution nanoparticles entering fetal human organs.
Professor Fowler's recent publications demonstrate expertise across reproductive biology, neurodevelopment, and food safety. His work shows consistent focus on environmental impacts on human development, particularly endocrine-disrupting chemicals and fetal programming, combining epidemiological, genomic, and experimental approaches.
- Anne McLaren Distinguished Scientist award by the Society for Reproduction & Fertility (2023)
- Fellow of the Royal Society of Biology, UK (FRSB) (2010)
Professor Fowler actively mentors PhD students and has secured major research funding from MRC, BBSRC, Wellcome Trust, charities, and PARC (2022-2029). He has led/participated in four large EU research programs studying endocrine disruption and co-authored numerous European Food Standards Agency opinions.
He is deeply involved in research groups within the Institute of Medical Sciences focused on reproductive health and fetal development, maintaining extensive international collaborations with regulatory bodies and research teams across Europe.
