Paul Crovella

Paul Crovella is an Associate Professor in the Department of Sustainable Resources Management at the State University of New York College of Environmental Science and Forestry. He holds a Ph.D. in Environmental and Resource Engineering from SUNY-ESF (2016), a M.Eng. in Agricultural and Biological Engineering from Cornell University (1990), and a B.Sc. in Agricultural and Biological Engineering from Cornell University (1989).

His research focuses on sustainable and healthy buildings, with primary interests in:

• Mass timber construction as a climate change solution
• Building Information Modeling for construction efficiency
• Adaptive reuse and historical preservation techniques
• Evidence-based design impacts on occupant wellbeing
• Deconstruction and material lifecycle analysis

Recent publications demonstrate strong emphasis on mass timber mechanics, bio-based insulation materials, drone-based building assessment, and carbon accounting frameworks. His work consistently addresses sustainable material development and building performance optimization.

Dr. Crovella advises seven graduate students researching topics including biophilic design in timber spaces, mass timber circular construction, embodied carbon assessment, and building energy modeling. He leads the Mass Timber Research Group investigating wood construction solutions for climate challenges.

He teaches courses including Environmental Performance Measures for Buildings, Sustainable Energy Systems, Building Information Modeling, and Applied Structures, integrating sustainable construction principles throughout the curriculum.
