Dr. Cohen's scholarly work centers on saxophone history and literature, with over one hundred published articles worldwide and his seminal column 'Vintage Saxophones Revisited' in Saxophone Journal (1985-2002). His research focuses on rediscovering lost compositions from the early 20th century, including orchestral works by Loeffler and Florio, alongside rare chamber music by Grainger and Cowell. As an active arranger and editor, he has expanded saxophone repertoire through publications like 'The Altissimo Primer' technique book and arrangements of Ives' 'Variations on America' and Copland's works.
Founder of To the Fore Publishers, Dr. Cohen curates an extensive private collection of rare saxophones and manuscripts, frequently incorporating these artifacts into lectures that demonstrate historical performance practices. He maintains active collaborations with ensembles including the Saxophone Sinfonia and Quintet of the Americas, while continuing to record new repertoire such as the 2019 'New York Rising' saxophone quartet album.
