About
Dr Paul Coats is a Lecturer at the Strathclyde Institute of Pharmacy and Biomedical Sciences (SIPBS), University of Strathclyde, within the Faculty of Science. His work bridges cardiovascular research, vascular physiology, and pharmacology, with strong interdisciplinary collaboration across biology, chemistry, and bioengineering.
His research focuses on vascular health and disease, particularly the mechanisms underlying vascular restenosis, arteriovenous fistula stenosis, hypoxia-induced remodeling, and mitochondrial regulation in vascular cells. He employs techniques such as vascular organ bath pharmacology, pressure myography, primary cell culture, and vascular imaging.
The most recent publications highlight his work on inflammatory signaling in endothelial cells, mitochondrial control of exosomal miRNA in vascular disease, and the biological performance of electrospun polymers for drug delivery. These reflect a strong trend toward understanding cellular mechanisms in cardiovascular pathology and developing novel therapeutic strategies.
- Teaching Excellence Award (2020)
Dr Coats has supervised multiple students and led or co-led several research projects funded by the British Heart Foundation and Wellcome Trust. He actively collaborates with researchers across SIPBS and the wider university, contributing to impactful, clinically relevant science. His lab works closely with experts in drug formulation, delivery, and bioengineering to translate findings into real-world applications.
