About
Paul Brownbill is a Senior Lecturer in Developmental Biology & Medicine at the University of Manchester, specializing in placental physiology and toxicology.
His research examines placental vascular function, transplacental solute/water transfer, and dysregulation in pregnancy pathologies. Key focuses include: regulation of fetoplacental blood flow, oxygen transfer mechanisms, paracellular transport pathways, and placental endothelial signaling. He established the ex vivo human placental perfusion model to study nanoparticle therapies, antihypertensive drug safety, and air pollution impacts.
Recent work characterizes free fetal hemoglobin's role in fetal growth restriction and evaluates maternal medication effects on chorionic plate vasculature. His NIH/industry collaborations develop placental-targeted therapies using liposomal epidermal growth factor delivery systems.
