Paul Barnes

Professor Paul Barnes is a distinguished academic and administrator at Birkbeck, University of London, where he has served since 1968. A BSc (Physics) graduate from Bristol University and PhD holder from Cambridge, he transitioned from postdoctoral research into a lectureship in Crystallography. He became a Professor in Applied Crystallography (1994) and led the Industrial Materials Group for 30 years. His research focuses on synchrotron-based X-ray/neutron diffraction, materials science (zeolites, ceramics), and applications of crystallography to industrial and environmental challenges.

Administratively, he served as College Dean, overseeing scholarships and resolving disputes, and as a Governor. He pioneered techniques like TEDDI for 3D material imaging and contributed to global environmental policy through UNEP assessments. His recognition includes Fellowship of Birkbeck (2007). Post-retirement, he continues research at Birkbeck/UCL while pursuing musical interests.
