Dr. Paul Appleton is a Senior Lecturer in Coaching and Sport Development at Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU), affiliated with the Institute of Sport. He leads the MSc programs in Sport and Exercise Science, Sport and Exercise Psychology, and Strength & Conditioning. His academic qualifications include a PhD from the University of Bedfordshire (2009), FHEA from the Higher Education Academy (2014), and a Postgraduate Certificate in Academic Practice from the University of Birmingham (2014).
Dr. Appleton’s research focuses on motivational climates in sport, athlete well-being, and the impact of coach and teacher education. His work examines empowering environments, interpersonal violence prevention in sports, and questionnaire development. He currently leads an IOC-funded project investigating interpersonal violence in athletes across eight countries. His research spans empirical studies on perfectionism, burnout, and the application of self-determination theory.
In teaching, he oversees Professional Skills and Dissertation units for MSc programs and teaches Sport and Youth Leadership courses at the undergraduate level. He supervises one PhD student at MMU and two at the University of Birmingham, alongside mentoring MSc and BSc research projects. His contributions include over 50 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters, emphasizing cross-cultural validity, motivational climate assessment, and athlete development.
