Dr. Paul Alonso is an Associate Professor in the School of Modern Languages at Georgia Tech, affiliated with the Ivan Allen College of Liberal Arts. He holds a Ph.D. in Journalism from the University of Texas at Austin (2012), an M.A. in Journalism and Latin American Studies (2007), and a B.A. in Literature and Linguistics from the Pontifical Catholic University of Peru (2002). His research focuses on Latin American media, satire, infotainment, and cultural studies, with notable works including Satiric TV in the Americas (Oxford UP, 2018) and Thirty Years of Entertainment and Politics in Peru (Planeta, 2022). In 2024, he received a Fulbright Scholar Award.
Alonso’s academic career includes a decade at the Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas and current leadership of Polivision, a bilingual media outlet covering Latin American arts and culture. His interdisciplinary work bridges academia and journalism, with extensive publications in venues like El País, El Nuevo Herald, and Dedo Medio. He is also a fiction writer, with novels like Almost Rock and Roll (2024) and short story collections exploring Peruvian identity.
His research interests span media’s role in politics, cultural hybridity, and digital satire. He has advised numerous journalistic projects and contributed to debates on Latin American cultural identity through his writing and media work.
