Patrick Rupert-Kruse

Prof. Dr. Patrick Rupert-Kruse serves as Professor of Media Theory and Immersion Research at the Department of Media, Kiel University of Applied Sciences since 2014. He holds key leadership roles including Vice Dean, Commissioner for Studies/Teaching/Examinations, and Program Director for the Master's program "Media Conception". Additionally, he directs the Institute for Immersive Media (ifim) and co-directs the Interdisciplinary Laboratory for Immersion Research (LINK), while chairing the Society for Immersive Media Schleswig-Holstein since 2023.

His academic foundation includes studies in Modern German Literature and Media Studies, Philosophy, and Psychology at Kiel University (Christian-Albrechts-Universität zu Kiel), culminating in a 2010 dissertation on "Imagination and Empathy" followed by teaching and research positions at the same institution.

Rupert-Kruse's research program spans immersive media conception (Virtual Reality, Mixed Reality, Locative Media), aesthetics of virtual embodiment, transmedia storytelling frameworks, and media reception analysis with specialized focus on emotion/empathy dynamics and presence experience. His work integrates media development, convergence phenomena, and innovative cultural mediation formats, reflecting interdisciplinary engagement across technical and humanistic domains.

He leads the Institute for Immersive Media (ifim) and Interdisciplinary Laboratory for Immersion Research (LINK), co-founded the Moving Image Studies Kiel research group, and serves as Managing Editor of the Yearbook of Moving Image Studies (YoMIS). His project leadership includes "XRai Vision" exploring Extended Reality and Artificial Intelligence applications.

For thesis supervision, Rupert-Kruse requires students to submit detailed exposés two months before registration, covering research questions, contextual frameworks, and methodological approaches. His academic guidance occurs through structured Wednesday consultation hours addressing both general academic matters and project-specific development.
