About
Patrick R. Melvin serves as Associate Professor of Chemistry at Bryn Mawr College, leading an active research group focused on organic and organometallic methodology development. Currently on academic leave for the 2025-26 year, he teaches core courses including Organic Chemistry I/II, Advanced Organic Chemistry, and Organometallic Chemistry. His work bridges synthetic chemistry with pharmaceutical applications through innovative reagent design.
Education
- B.A. in Chemistry, West Chester University of Pennsylvania
- Ph.D. in Organic Chemistry, Yale University
- Postdoctoral Fellowship, University of Michigan
Research centers on creating novel synthetic methodologies, particularly for fluorination chemistry and ligand development in metal-catalyzed reactions. The lab pioneered sulfone iminium fluorides (SIFs) enabling ultrafast alcohol-to-alkyl fluoride conversions (<60 seconds) and expanded applications to acyl fluorides and SuFEx chemistry. These tunable reagents address critical challenges in pharmaceutical and agrochemical synthesis where fluorine incorporation enhances molecular properties.
Recent publications demonstrate consistent innovation in fluorination methodology, with four high-impact papers (2022-2024) in Organic Letters and RSC Advances. Work emphasizes practical reagent design achieving unprecedented reaction speeds while maintaining synthetic versatility for complex molecule construction.
Funding
- Charles E. Kaufman Foundation grant (2021)
- NSF RUI grant for fluorination project (2023)
Mentored two Master's students (Jim Vogel, Rich Davis) to thesis completion and supervised numerous undergraduates through Bryn Mawr's Summer Science Research program. NSF and Kaufman funding supports undergraduate fellowships and equipment for the fluorination and ligand development projects. Students regularly present at ACS National Meetings and transition to top PhD programs (e.g., UC Berkeley, UW Madison).
The Melvin Research Group operates within Bryn Mawr's Chemistry Department, integrating graduate and undergraduate researchers. Recent team members include Kirya Miller, Jenna Krussman, and Summer Science Research Fellows. The lab maintains strong industry connections through reagent applications in pharmaceutical synthesis and presents annually at major chemistry conferences.
