Patrick Primavesi serves as Professor and Director of the Institute for Theatre Studies at the University of Leipzig, a position he has held since 2017. He additionally serves as Deputy Director of the Centre of Competence for Theatre (CCT) and sits on the board of Tanzarchiv Leipzig eV. From 2013 to 2019, he was Dean of Studies at the Faculty of History, Art, and Regional Studies.
His academic career began with a research assistant position at the Frankfurt Institute for Theatre, Film, and Media Studies, where until 2008 he established the Master's program in Dramaturgy with Hans-Thies Lehmann. Since 2016, he has led the ARCHIVE working group at the Society for Theatre Studies (gtw) together with Franziska Voss (FID DK). Since 2021, he has contributed to the DFG consortium NFDI4Culture, focusing on data standards for performing arts.
Professor Primavesi's research spans theatre, dance and performance history and theory, representational critique, transculturality and the public sphere, movement in urban space, and archives in digital environments. His scholarly work bridges academic research with practical applications in contemporary theatre practice.
He has been instrumental in developing academic programs and research initiatives that connect theatre studies with broader cultural and social contexts, emphasizing transdisciplinary and transcultural perspectives as guiding principles for the Institute's work.
