Patrick Lyden

Patrick Lyden is Professor of Physiology & Neuroscience and Neurology at USC's Zilkha Neurogenetic Institute. A leader in stroke therapy, he co-directed the landmark NINDS t-PA trial - the first proven stroke treatment - and currently leads NIH-funded networks including SPAN and StrokeNet.

Research spans translational neuroprotection, thrombolysis optimization, and stroke assessment tools. Major domains: 1) Developing cerebroprotective agents through multicenter preclinical trials, 2) Refining thrombolytic protocols for safety/efficacy, and 3) Validating global stroke assessment scales.

Recent publications highlight innovations in preclinical trial design, neuroprotective compounds, and culturally adapted assessment tools. Studies consistently demonstrate methodological rigor across species and diverse populations.
