Patricia Bruininks

Patricia Bruininks is a Professor in the Department of Psychology at Whitworth University since 2007. Her research focuses on emotion and decision-making, positive psychology, and the psychology of poverty and consumerism. She holds a Ph.D., M.S., and B.A. from the University of Oregon, Hope College, respectively.

Her work explores distinctions between hope and optimism, the psychological impacts of consumerism, and the intersection of spirituality with mental health. Notable publications include studies on religious/spirituality measures and emotion classification. Awards include twice being named Whitworth's Most Influential Professor and a Lilly Summer Fellowship.

Bruininks teaches courses such as Psychology of Poverty & Social Class and leads research on hope in environmental contexts. Her grants include projects on consumer culture and human dignity. She advises multiple student researchers and collaborates on interdisciplinary projects linking psychology with religious studies and environmental science.
