Martin Luther University Halle-WittenbergAbout
Pascal Schiemann serves as a Research Fellow in the Department of Musicology at the Faculty of Philosophy II, Martin Luther University Halle-Wittenberg (MLU), where he has held academic positions since 2011. His current role as Research Associate began in October 2023, following appointments as Lecturer (Winter 2022/23) and Research Assistant (Summer 2023).
His academic journey includes:
- 2011–2020: Studies in Musicology and German at MLU
- 2013–2020: Research Assistant at IMMS and Institute for Ethnology and Philosophy
- 2016–2020: Tutor in the German Department
Scholarly work centers on Musical Postmodernism, Poststructuralism, and Paraconsistent Aesthetics, with significant contributions to Concert Form analysis (c. 1800) and Black Metal studies. His research bridges historical musicology with contemporary philosophical frameworks, examining ideological dimensions in extreme metal subcultures and structural innovations in classical-era concertos. Current projects explore the intersection of silence, pop culture, and film soundtracks through semiotic and cultural lenses.
Publication trends reveal a consistent trajectory from historical analysis (Classical-era concert forms) toward contemporary cultural critique (postmodernism, Black Metal ideology), demonstrating methodological versatility across music-historical periods and theoretical paradigms. Recent work increasingly engages with political philosophy and cross-cultural aesthetics.
Scientific recognition includes:
- German Academic Scholarship Foundation fellowship (2016-2020)
- Graduate Fund of Saxony-Anhalt doctoral support (since 2021)
- DAAD-funded research residency at Stony Brook University (2022)
Mentorship activities include tutoring German Department students (2013-2020) and lecturing in Musicology. Research is supported by competitive fellowships enabling international collaboration, particularly in postmodern aesthetics and global metal studies. Current projects involve interdisciplinary work through MLU's Institute for Music, Media and Speech Sciences (IMMS), focusing on paraconsistent logic applications in music analysis and cross-cultural Black Metal research.
