Parag K. Mital is a Lecturer in the Department of Design Media Arts (DMA) at the University of California, Los Angeles (UCLA), part of the School of the Arts and Architecture. He holds a Ph.D. from Goldsmiths, University of London, where his interdisciplinary research focused on computational models of perception. Mital’s work bridges machine learning, cognitive science, and generative art, exploring the intersection of human and computational perception. He also serves as CTO and Head of Research at Hypersurfaces, Ltd., a London-based startup.
His research interests include machine learning, computer vision, and generative art, with a focus on eye-tracking studies, EEG/fMRI research, and large-scale archival analysis. Notable projects include the Walt Disney Concert Hall Dreams (2018), leveraging neural networks to analyze LA Philharmonic archives, and the Daphne Oram Browser (2010–2013), an interactive tool for exploring historical sound archives. His work has been exhibited globally, including at the Victoria & Albert Museum and Prix Ars Electronica.
Mital has taught computational arts courses at UCLA, Dartmouth College, and others, emphasizing computer vision, signal processing, and algorithmic sound. His collaborations span artists like David Lynch, Refik Anadol, and institutions such as Google and the British Film Institute.
His scientific awards include recognition at the Prix Ars Electronica. Key publications include works on corpus-based synthesis and AI-driven archival projects. Mital’s research and art reflect a dual focus: scientific rigor driving theories, and artistic practice redefining research questions.
