Paolo Magagnoli

Dr. Paolo Magagnoli is a Senior Lecturer at the University of Queensland's School of Communication and Arts, affiliated with the Centre for Critical and Creative Writing. He holds a PhD in Art History from University College London (2012) and joined UQ in 2015. His research focuses on the intersection of art history, media studies, and documentary practices, particularly exploring contemporary artists' use of images to construct historical narratives and address social justice issues. He specializes in photography's role in Australian and Pacific contexts, labor histories, and environmental activism.

His educational background includes a Master's and PhD from UCL, followed by academic positions in Australia. Magagnoli emphasizes interdisciplinary approaches, bridging art history, sociology, and cultural studies. He has authored Documents of Utopia: The Politics of Experimental Documentary (2015) and contributed to journals such as Oxford Art Journal and Third Text.

Research interests include colonial photographic archives, labor portraiture in Australian-Pacific contexts, and the politics of documentary. He actively supervises students in photography's intersections with fine art, film, and media. His work critiques extractive industries' environmental impacts and explores how visual culture shapes social movements.

Magagnoli's recent projects examine the legacy of indentured labor through photography and the role of museums in representing working-class histories. He engages with contemporary issues like climate change and postcolonial narratives in art and media.
