Panizza Allmark

Professor Panizza Allmark is a Professor of Visual and Cultural Studies at Edith Cowan University's School of Arts and Humanities. She holds a PhD from ECU and has over 20 years of academic and photographic research experience. Her work spans cultural studies, photography, media analysis, and migration studies with a focus on gender, activism, and transnational issues. She is Chief Editor of Continuum: Journal of Media & Cultural Studies and leads the Western Australia East Java University Consortium (WAEJUC).

Research Interests:

• Cultural studies and visual research methodologies
• Photography as sociopolitical tool
• Migration and diaspora studies, particularly Indonesian migrant workers in Hong Kong
• Gender studies and feminist media analysis
• Social media activism and digital ethnography
• Urban studies including tourism spectacles and retail spaces

Her articles explore topics like refugee narratives, transnational labor, and Australian cultural identity. Recent work includes studies on migrant mothering strategies during pandemics and the role of photography in protest movements.

Awards: Recipient of ECU’s 2025 Best in Broadcast Award, 2014 Research Supervision Excellence, and multiple teaching accolades. A Leadership WA Fellow with 20% above-average leadership benchmarks.

Grants and Supervision: Led a $187,500 ARC grant on welfare dependency communication. Supervised 12+ doctoral and master’s students focusing on topics like China’s Double Reduction Policy framing, HPV vaccination perceptions, and Indigenous Taiwanese media analysis.

Creative Work: 15 solo exhibitions across London, New York, Shanghai, and Australia. Notable works include 2016’s Seeing the Outside In: Shopping Centres and Spectacle and 2013’s Global Connections: New York vs Paris exhibition.
