Pandelis Kourtessis is an Associate Professor at the Department of Engineering and Technology, University of Hertfordshire, affiliated with the Centre for AI and Robotics Research and the Centre for Future Societies. His primary focus is on Cognitive Networks, with research interests spanning Next Generation PONs, MAC Protocols, 5G RANs, Optical/Wireless Convergence, and SDN Cellular/Satellite IP Networks. He holds teaching specialisms in Mobile & Digital Communication Networks, Telecommunication Systems, and Optical Communication Systems.
Dr. Kourtessis has led or collaborated on 32 research projects since 2004, including initiatives in Extended Reality healthcare training, AI-driven healthcare scenario modeling, and microgrid management in Ukraine. His work integrates cutting-edge technologies like Reconfigurable Intelligent Surfaces (RIS), STAR-RIS, and Terahertz communications with applications in autonomous transportation and pandemic response.
His research output (112 publications) emphasizes innovative solutions for next-generation networks, including channel estimation in intelligent metasurfaces, full-duplex mMIMO systems, and hybrid federated learning architectures. He actively collaborates with global institutions and industry partners, contributing to IEEE standards and the Optical Society of America (OSA).
Key technical contributions include pioneering work on stacked intelligent metasurfaces, STAR-RIS aided MIMO systems, and AI-driven healthcare monitoring. Current projects focus on optimizing 5G/6G architectures, sustainable network design, and cross-disciplinary applications of cognitive networks in societal systems.
