Pamela Walsh

Pamela Walsh is a Senior Lecturer in the School of Mechanical and Aerospace Engineering (SMEA) at Queen’s University Belfast since 2020, previously affiliated with the School of Chemistry & Chemical Engineering. She holds a Royal Academy of Engineering (RAEng) Leverhulme Trust Research Fellowship (2022–23) and was a former Marie Skłodowska-Curie Fellow. She is a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (FHEA) with a PhD in Engineering from Queen’s University Belfast.

Her research focuses on marine materials, including seaweeds and microalgae, for pharmaceutical, biotechnological, and biomedical applications. Key areas include algal extracts, biomass valorisation, and biomedical applications of marine-derived materials. She leads or co-leads projects such as SeaFEED (DAERA/DAFM) on seaweed-based animal feeds and SeaSolutions (EU) to reduce livestock methane emissions via seaweed extracts.

Walsh’s work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, particularly addressing sustainable agriculture and climate action. Her publications span topics like algal adhesion mechanisms, phlorotannin biochemistry, and biomaterials for tissue repair. She has received awards including the June Wilson Memorial Award (2011) and contributes to academic administration and public engagement, including roles as a SWAN Champion and participant in outreach initiatives.

Her research has been funded by Invest NI, the Royal Society, EU H2020, and DAERA/DAFM. She actively supervises PhD research and collaborates internationally. Recent activities include presenting at the UK Society for Biomaterials and participating in workshops on science policy and diversity initiatives.
