Dr PJ Lennon is a Senior Lecturer in Spanish at the University of St Andrews, affiliated with the School of Modern Languages. He joined St Andrews in 2017 after roles at Cambridge and Exeter universities. He holds an LLB from the University of Edinburgh, MPhil and PhD from the University of Cambridge, and is a Fellow of Advance HE. He is also a Birutė Ciplijauskaitė Fellow in Peninsular Spanish Literature and Culture at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (2025–26).
His research focuses on Early Modern Hispanic literature and culture, exploring influences such as poetry, gender dynamics, and classical reception. He co-supervises PhD students at St Andrews and Edinburgh. His work includes analyzing literary works by figures like Francisco de Aldana, Boscán, and Calderón, as well as examining colonial history in films like También la lluvia.
Dr Lennon’s publications span articles on topics like the Astorga Collection, monsters in Renaissance poetry, and paradisiacal themes in Hispanic literature. His book Love in the Poetry of Francisco de Aldana challenges Neoplatonist conventions. He has received numerous awards, including the AHRC Doctoral Award and travel grants from the Department of Spanish & Portuguese.
