Prof. Dr. Pınar Bilgin is a Professor of International Relations at Bilkent University and a member of the Turkish Academy of Sciences. She holds a Ph.D. from the University of Wales, Aberystwyth (2000), and multiple advanced degrees in International Relations and Strategic Studies. Her research focuses on critical security studies, Middle East geopolitics, and postcolonial approaches to world politics. Notable works include Regional Security in the Middle East (2005/2019), The International in Security (2016), and co-edited volumes such as the Routledge Handbook of International Political Sociology.
Her academic career includes visiting positions at King's College London, Leiden University, the University of Copenhagen, and the University of Amsterdam. She served as Associate Editor of Security Dialogue, International Political Sociology, and International Studies Quarterly, while currently holding editorial roles across 12+ journals. Bilgin has received awards for groundbreaking scholarship, including the GEBİP Young Scientist Award (2008) and TÜBİTAK Incentive Award (2009).
Bilgin's work critically examines geopolitical constructions of regions (e.g., 'Middle East'), Eurocentrism in IR theory, and security practices' cultural-political dimensions. Her recent research explores relational epistemology, decolonizing global IR frameworks, and contrapuntal readings of migration crises. As President of the World International Studies Committee since 2021, she advocates for non-Western perspectives in academic discourse.
