About
Ozan Akkus serves as an Associate Professor in the Weldon School of Biomedical Engineering at Purdue University, joining the faculty in January 2006 after directing the Orthopaedic Bioengineering Laboratories at the University of Toledo.
His educational background includes:
- B.S.M.E. and M.S. in Engineering Sciences from Middle East Technical University (Ankara, Turkey)
- Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering from Case Western Reserve University
Dr. Akkus' research pioneers the investigation of skeletal fragility mechanisms caused by aging, disease, overuse, and sterilization through advanced biomechanical analysis and materials characterization. His work strategically targets fracture prevention by modulating biomineralization processes and developing predictive fracture sensors that detect micro-damage precursors before catastrophic failure occurs.
His distinguished recognition includes:
- NSF CAREER award for transformative research potential
- Outstanding Teacher Award from the Biomedical Engineering Society chapter at the University of Toledo
Prior to Purdue, he established his research leadership as Director of the Orthopaedic Bioengineering Laboratories at the University of Toledo and completed postdoctoral training in Orthopaedics at Mount Sinai School of Medicine.
