Oscar Rocha

Oscar Rocha is an Associate Professor in the Department of Biological Sciences at Kent State University. His research focuses on plant genetics, conservation biology, tropical ecology, and invasion ecology, with a particular emphasis on understanding genetic diversity in natural populations and the impacts of human activities on tropical ecosystems. He has conducted extensive studies on reproductive ecology, selective seed abortion, and the conservation of genetic resources in legumes and other plant species.

Research Interests
Dr. Rocha’s work explores the genetic structure of plant populations, the effects of ecological factors on genetic diversity, and the dynamics of invasive species. His current projects include studying the invasion of Amur honeysuckle (Lonicera maackii) and the genetic diversity of tropical dry forest trees such as Enterolobium cyclocarpum.

His recent work includes studies on genetic variation in Juniperus species, the impact of emerald ash borer invasions on forest ecosystems, and the reproductive biology of tropical plants. These studies highlight his focus on linking genetic data with ecological processes to inform conservation strategies.

He has advised numerous graduate students, including Laura Cancino, Connie Hausman, and Michael Monfredi, whose research spans topics like invasive species dynamics, genetic diversity in tropical forests, and conservation genetics. His lab is part of the Environmental Science and Design Research Institute at Kent State.
