Oscar Ritter

Oscar Ritter is a Research Fellow (PhD student) at the Leibniz Institute for Tropospheric Research (TROPOS) in Leipzig, Germany, working within the Department of Remote Sensing of Atmospheric Processes as part of the Clouds, Aerosols and Radiation research team.

Ritter's research specializes in the decameter and hectometer scale variability of cloud properties and radiation. He employs high-resolution satellite imagery, particularly from the Sentinel-2 mission, for advanced cloud remote sensing applications. His work also explores urban heat island phenomena through mobile weather stations and citizen science methodologies, effectively bridging theoretical atmospheric science with practical urban climate studies.

His current research project focuses on object-based characterization of shallow cumulus clouds over the Southern Great Plains using synergistic high-resolution remote sensing methods. Previously, he characterized trade wind cumulus properties during the EUREC⁴A campaign using Sentinel-2 observations, which formed the foundation of his master's thesis.

At TROPOS, Ritter serves as the doctoral student representative. He was instrumental in the "Meteorology up close" citizen science initiative during summer 2022, which engaged Leipzig residents in collecting urban climate data through MeteoTrackers attached to bicycles and vehicles, demonstrating his commitment to public scientific engagement.
