About
Dr. Onno van Gaans is an Assistant Professor in Mathematics at Leiden University's Mathematical Institute, where he has held a tenure-track position since January 1, 2006. His academic work focuses on functional analysis and stochastic differential equations, with particular expertise in partially ordered vector spaces, isometric theory of Banach spaces, and various aspects of stochastic processes in infinite dimensions.
Dr. van Gaans earned his PhD in Mathematics and Computer Science from the Catholic University of Nijmegen in 1999, following earlier studies at Delft University of Technology where he received his Master of Science (cum laude) in Technical Mathematics in 1994. Prior to his appointment at Leiden, he held postdoctoral positions at several prestigious institutions including the Free University of Amsterdam, Leiden University, Delft University of Technology, Humboldt University of Berlin, and Friedrich-Schiller University Jena.
His research spans two primary domains: functional analysis, with focus on partially ordered vector spaces and isometric theory of Banach spaces; and stochastic differential equations, exploring invariant measures, SDE with delay, semimartingales, and stochastic integration in Banach spaces. He also investigates nonexpansive dynamical systems and measure-valued evolution equations. His current research interests include duality maps, stationary points, complexification of ordered vector spaces, and Pettis-integrable functions.

Dr. van Gaans has received significant research funding through a Vidi-grant from the Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO) for his project on 'Stationary dynamics in infinite dimensions.' This prestigious grant supports his innovative work at the intersection of analysis and probability theory.
As an educator, Dr. van Gaans has supervised multiple PhD and master's students, including Joris Bierkens (chief supervisor S.M. Verduyn Lunel) and Igor Stojkovic (chief supervisor S.M. Verduyn Lunel). He regularly teaches courses in analysis and functional analysis, and has co-organized the Bachelor's Seminarium Analyse, Stochastiek en Besliskunde (BASB) with Professor Frank den Hollander. He has offered numerous bachelor projects on topics including complexification of ordered vector spaces, Pettis-integrable functions, and duality maps.
Dr. van Gaans maintains an active research seminar on Evolution equations in probability spaces and has organized reading courses on semigroup theory. His office is located in Room 222 at Niels Bohrweg 1, Leiden.
