About
Omar Wever-Pinzon, MD, FACC, is an Associate Professor of Medicine at the University of Utah and serves as the Cardiac Director of the Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Program Center of Excellence. He holds board certifications in Internal Medicine and Advanced Heart Failure & Transplant Cardiology. His clinical and research expertise centers on hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, mechanical circulatory support, heart transplantation, and myocardial recovery mechanisms.
Dr. Wever-Pinzon completed his medical degree at the University of Panama, followed by residencies and fellowships at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital Center (Columbia University), the University of Utah, and New York Presbyterian Hospital-Columbia University Medical Center. His training includes specialized focus in Advanced Cardiac Imaging, Cardiovascular Disease, and Advanced Heart Failure/Transplant Cardiology.
His research program develops innovative approaches for managing hypertrophic cardiomyopathy and heart failure, with emphasis on ventricular assist devices, cardiac recovery pathways, and transplant outcomes. Recent work explores metabolic reprogramming during mechanical unloading, donor-derived DNA biomarkers for rejection, and precision medicine applications in cardiomyopathy.
Publications demonstrate consistent focus on ventricular assist device outcomes, myocardial recovery biomarkers, and hypertrophic cardiomyopathy management. Collaborative studies frequently utilize national registries (INTERMACS, STS) and molecular profiling techniques to advance translational cardiology.
He leads multidisciplinary initiatives including the Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy Program and contributes to national research consortia focused on mechanical circulatory support and heart failure recovery.
