About
Oliver Tappe serves as a Senior Researcher at Heidelberg University's Institute of Anthropology and holds a Visiting Professorship at EASt for the 2024-2025 academic year. His scholarly work centers on Southeast Asian anthropology with deep specialization in Laotian society, history, and cultural dynamics.
Tappe's research program investigates historical anthropology through the lenses of labor relations, migration systems, and sociocultural transformation in Laos. His current German Research Foundation-funded project examines tin mining practices, analyzing how artisanal and small-scale miners navigate sociocosmological frameworks and ritual traditions. This work exemplifies his signature methodological integration of ethnographic fieldwork with archival historical analysis to produce multidimensional cultural interpretations.
Recent publications reveal consistent scholarly engagement with Southeast Asian resource frontiers and upland societies. The 2022 co-edited volume 'Extracting Development' and 2021 special issue on 'Upland Societies' demonstrate recurring thematic focus on political ecology, development discourses, and cultural resilience. These works highlight collaborative international scholarship through partnerships with researchers across institutional and national boundaries.
Tappe maintains active research funding through the German Research Foundation for his Laos mining project. This support enables comprehensive field investigations and archival work, contributing to anthropological understandings of resource extraction's sociocultural dimensions. His publication trajectory indicates sustained scholarly productivity with emphasis on regional expertise and interdisciplinary approaches.
