Oliver Tappe

Oliver Tappe serves as a Senior Researcher at Heidelberg University's Institute of Anthropology and holds a Visiting Professorship at EASt for the 2024-2025 academic year. His scholarly work centers on Southeast Asian anthropology with deep specialization in Laotian society, history, and cultural dynamics.

Tappe's research program investigates historical anthropology through the lenses of labor relations, migration systems, and sociocultural transformation in Laos. His current German Research Foundation-funded project examines tin mining practices, analyzing how artisanal and small-scale miners navigate sociocosmological frameworks and ritual traditions.
