Oliver Freiberger is a Professor of Asian Studies and Religious Studies at the University of Texas at Austin's College of Liberal Arts. He earned his Ph.D. in Indology (with minors in History of Religions and Tibetology) from Georg-August-Universität Göttingen, Germany (1999) and a Habilitation in Religious Studies from University of Bayreuth (2009). - Research Focus: History of Buddhism in South Asia, asceticism, religious boundary-making, and comparative methodology in religious studies.
- Teaching: Offers undergraduate and graduate courses on Buddhism, interreligious dynamics, and comparative religion across multiple departments (Religious Studies, Asian Studies, Core Texts and Ideas).
- Publications: Authored/co-authored five monographs and ten collected volumes, including Considering Comparison: A Method for Religious Studies (Oxford University Press, 2019) and Religionsvergleich: Ansätze, Kritik, Praxis (Nomos, 2022).
Scientific Recognition: Awarded the Donald D. Harrington Faculty Fellowship in 2002-03.
