About
Professor Oliver Bandmann is a faculty member at the University of Sheffield, School of Medicine and Population Health, holding the Professorship of Movement Disorders Neurology and serving as Co-Director of the Neuroscience Institute. As an Honorary Consultant Neurologist, he bridges clinical practice with translational research at the Sheffield Institute for Translational Neuroscience (SITraN).
- Education: MD and PhD in Genetic Aspects of Parkinsonian Disorders from Queen Square Institute of Neurology, supervised by Professors A.E. Harding, C.D. Marsden, and N.W. Wood
- Research Leadership: Focus on movement disorders including Parkinson's, Huntington's, and Wilson Disease, emphasizing disease-modifying therapies
Research Interests center on mitochondrial dysfunction and neuroprotective compound screening, notably identifying FDA-approved ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA) as a potential treatment. His group pioneered zebrafish models for Parkinson's research, uncovering TIGAR inhibition as a novel therapeutic target. They also investigate mitochondrial biomarkers and lead clinical trials like the UP study.
Publication Trends show consistent focus on mitochondrial mechanisms in neurodegeneration, zebrafish disease modeling, and clinical trial methodology for Parkinson's. Key subfields include neuroprotective drug discovery, genetic risk stratification, and bioenergetic imaging in movement disorders.
Scientific Awards:
- Bavarian/Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft Scholarships
- Royal Society of Medicine President's Prize
- Institute of Neurology Queen Square Prize
- Oppenheim Prize for Dystonia Research
- Multiple Consultant Teacher of the Year awards
Academic Leadership: Undergraduate Teaching Lead for 15 years, BMedSci Programme Director for 5 years, and current NIHR-funded Clinical Research Facility training lead. Supervises PhD students in neurodegenerative disease and collaborates extensively with Michael J Fox Foundation and Medical Research Council.
