Dr. Oliver Bakewell is Reader in Migration Studies at the University of Manchester's Global Development Institute and Research Coordinator for Migration and Development at the EU Trust Fund for Africa. With a PhD from the University of Bath, his work examines migration-mobility intersections with development processes, focusing on Africa.
His research explores migration systems theory, borderland dynamics, and transnational citizenship, with field experience across the Horn of Africa. He currently leads the MSc International Development: Migration, Mobility and Displacement pathway.
Dr. Bakewell co-founded the International Migration Institute at Oxford and has directed projects including the Research & Evidence Facility for the Horn of Africa (2017-2021) and the GCRF South-South Migration Hub.
