About
Odili Donald Odita is a Professor of Painting at the Tyler School of Art, Temple University. His work bridges historical art movements, such as Africanist pattern traditions and modernist design, with contemporary conceptual frameworks to explore color, space, and sociopolitical narratives.
- BFA with Distinction, Ohio State University (1988)
- MFA, Bennington College (1990)
Odita’s research focuses on non-objective art as a medium for cultural connectivity and political reflection. His large-scale installations, such as those at the 52nd Venice Biennale (2007) and MoMA (2025), challenge traditional figure-ground relationships to evoke themes of openness and possibility.
His recent articles include contributions to publications like Vitamin P2: New Perspectives in Painting (2011) and Contemporary African Art Since 1980 (2009), alongside a 2017 video feature on The Art Assignment (PBS Digital Studios). These works emphasize color theory, abstract composition, and cross-cultural dialogue.
Odita’s accolades include global exhibitions at institutions such as the Museum of Modern Art, Philadelphia Museum of Art, and 52nd Venice Biennale. His practice spans discrete paintings and immersive installations, reflecting a commitment to engaging viewers through sensory and conceptual experiences.
