About
Norbert Mehlmer is a Group Leader in Systems Biology at the Werner Siemens-Chair of Synthetic Biotechnology (WSSB), Technical University of Munich. He holds the academic title of Privatdozent (PD Dr. rer. nat. habil.). His work focuses on integrating systems biology with biotechnological applications to optimize microbial production hosts and fermentative processes. Key research interests include metabolic pathway analysis, recombinant pathway integration, and design of user-defined microbial systems.
Education highlights include a PhD from the Max F. Perutz Laboratories (2004-2009) and postdoctoral research at LMU Munich and University of Vienna focusing on calcium signaling in chloroplasts. He has led projects such as OleoBuild (BMBF-funded) and BigPharm, advancing sustainable bioproduction and cannabinoid synthesis.
Current projects include developing novel platform organisms for hydrophilic compound production and designing biocatalytic pathways for industrial bioeconomy. His team combines transcriptome/proteome analysis with metabolic flux studies to enhance microbial host performance.
Research contributions span systems biology applications in bioprocess optimization, with emphasis on waste-free production systems and circular bio-refinery concepts. He has held leadership roles since 2018, managing interdisciplinary teams and advancing synthetic biotechnology innovations at TUM.
