Nishant Malik is an Assistant Professor in the School of Mathematics and Statistics at Rochester Institute of Technology (RIT), part of the College of Science. He holds a PhD from the University of Potsdam (Germany) and has held postdoctoral positions at Dartmouth College and UNC-Chapel Hill. His research focuses on data-driven analysis of complex systems using tools from network science, nonlinear dynamics, and applied statistics. He leads the Complexity Lab @RIT, a research group dedicated to interdisciplinary applications of these methods.
Malik's expertise includes complex systems, data science, dynamical systems, and mathematical modeling. He has published extensively on topics ranging from climate network analysis to landslide prediction and epidemic dynamics. Notable awards include the Carl Ramsauer Prize (2012) for his PhD work on Indian monsoon dynamics. He teaches courses such as Calculus, Probability & Statistics, and Mathematical Data Science at RIT, and actively engages in academic service including editorial roles and conference participation.
His work integrates interdisciplinary approaches, addressing challenges in climate science, environmental hazards, and social systems. Recent projects include developing machine learning tools for landslide movement prediction and advancing methods to detect paleoclimate transitions using recurrence matrices. Malik collaborates globally, with applications in geophysics, epidemiology, and computational biology.
