About
Nina Karnovsky is a Professor of Biology at Pomona College, where she has served since 2004, and previously held a Visiting Assistant Professor position in The Claremont Colleges Joint Sciences Department. Her research laboratory is located in Seaver Biology 123, with office space in Seaver Biology 122.
She holds a Bachelor of Arts from Wesleyan University, Master of Sciences from Montana State University, and Ph.D. from the University of California, Irvine.
Dr. Karnovsky's research focuses on climate change impacts on polar marine ecosystems, examining how shifting oceanographic conditions affect seabird foraging behavior, post-fire mammal community responses at the Bernard Field Station, and Arctic food web dynamics. Her fieldwork includes extensive research at the Hornsund Polar Station in Spitsbergen, Norway, where she studied dovekie chick growth rates and feeding ecology.
Her publication record (2010-2012) demonstrates consistent research on Arctic seabird ecology, particularly little auks and dovekies in the Greenland Sea, analyzing diet estimation methods, inter-colony behavioral variations, and climate change implications for reproductive success.
She actively involves undergraduate students in research, as evidenced by student co-authors on publications, and maintains collaborative international research networks focused on polar ecosystems.
