Nils-Eric Sahlin is a Professor (Chair) of Medical Ethics at the Faculty of Medicine, Lund University since 2006. He previously held the title of Professor of Theoretical Philosophy at Lund University (1999–2006) and was a Visiting Professor at institutions including the University of Pittsburgh (2011–2012) and the Institute for Future Studies (1998–1999).
He earned his Ph.D. in Philosophy from Lund University in 1984 with a dissertation on Secondary Levels in Decision Making. His research focuses on decision theory, medical ethics, philosophy of science, and the philosophy of creativity, particularly exploring the work of F.P. Ramsey.
Sahlin has held prominent roles in ethics governance: Chairman of the Swedish Research Council’s Expert Group on Ethics (2014–present), Chairman of Region Skåne’s Ethical Board (2014–present), and Member of the Swedish National Council of Medical Ethics (2007–present). He was awarded Fellowship in The Royal Swedish Academy of Letters, History and Antiquities (2008) and later became a board member of the same academy (2014).
His work bridges philosophy and practical ethics, emphasizing the application of decision theory to medical and societal challenges. He has edited influential volumes on topics like trust in science, risk management, and the value of life, reflecting his interdisciplinary approach to ethical dilemmas.
