Nils Barthel

Nils Barthel is a Researcher at the Institute of Earth System Sciences, Leibniz University Hannover, affiliated with the Department of Physical Geography and Landscape Ecology and the Physical Geography Group. His work focuses on analyzing artificial intelligence methods for geodata analysis, including deep learning and remote sensing applications. He holds an M.Sc. in Landscape Sciences (2024) and a B.Sc. in Geography (2021) from Leibniz University Hannover, with a thesis on humpback whale distribution modeling. His bachelor's degree in Political Science (2018) explored stability in Syria. Barthel has conducted internships at the Marine Research Center of the University of Iceland (2022) and BUND Hannover (2020).

Current projects include the LIFE project 'Atlantic Sandscapes' (2024–2025) for habitat modeling and erosion monitoring initiatives in Baden-Württemberg and Lower Saxony (2024–2028). He collaborates with institutions like the Institute of Earth System Sciences and contributes to teaching via Stud.IP.
