Max Planck Institute for Biology TübingenAbout
Nikos K. Logothetis is Emeritus Director at the Max Planck Institute for Biological Cybernetics where he led the Department of Physiology of Cognitive Processes. His research investigates neural mechanisms of perception and object recognition using multimodal approaches that integrate single-unit recordings, mass action potentials, and activity-related surrogate signals.
Holding a PhD in Human Neurobiology from Ludwig-Maximilians University, Logothetis has held positions at MIT, Baylor College of Medicine, and multiple honorary professorships. His methodological innovations include developing high-field MRI systems for simultaneous imaging and intracortical recordings in primates.
Key research areas:
- Neural basis of visual cognition
- Auditory perception and multisensory integration
- Plasticity and neuromodulation
- Neurovascular coupling mechanisms
- MR-detectable neural probes
Honors include the Louis-Jeantet Prize, Zülch-Price, and membership in the German Academy of Sciences and US National Academy of Sciences. Current work focuses on synthesizing smart contrast agents for revolutionary neuroimaging techniques with improved spatiotemporal resolution.
