Niklaus Labhardt

Niklaus Labhardt serves as a full professor at the University of Basel and head of the Division of Clinical Epidemiology at the University and University Hospital Basel. He holds dual leadership roles as Division Head of Clinical Epidemiology and Unit Head of International Clinical and Health Services Research within the Department of Clinical Research.

His research program focuses on epidemiological, clinical, diagnostic, and interventional studies targeting HIV, tuberculosis, COVID-19, arterial hypertension, diabetes, and common mental disorders. Labhardt specializes in pragmatic randomized clinical trials conducted in resource-limited settings with the explicit goal of generating evidence that directly impacts healthcare for underserved populations worldwide. His work bridges infectious diseases and emerging chronic non-communicable conditions, recognizing the evolving disease burden in low-resource settings.

Labhardt maintains active clinical practice as a senior staff physician at the Infectious Diseases Clinic of the University Hospital Basel while leading multiple significant research initiatives including Community Based Chronic Care Lesotho (ComBaCaL), Same-day vs Rapid ART Initiation in HIV-positive Individuals Presenting With Symptoms of TB (SaDAPT), and Dolutegravir in Real Life in Lesotho (DO-REAL).

As an educator, he lectures at the University of Basel, Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute, and ETH Zürich. Since 2017, he has served as president of the board of SolidarMed, a Swiss not-for-profit organization focused on healthcare in Africa, demonstrating his commitment to translating research into practical health interventions.
