About
Niklas Arnberg is Professor of Virology at Umeå University with joint affiliation to Molecular Infection Medicine Sweden (MIMS). His research investigates virus entry mechanisms and host-pathogen interactions to develop antiviral therapies and vaccine vectors.
Focus areas include receptor identification, viral tropism determinants, and host defense evasion strategies. The lab employs CRISPR-Cas9, organoids, and advanced microscopy to study adenoviruses and emerging pathogens.
Research has identified multiple cellular receptors enabling viral entry inhibition strategies. Current projects develop adenoviral vectors for gene therapy applications and study neurotropic virus complications.
Chair of Swedish Society for Virology and coordinator of Pandemifonden to strengthen pandemic preparedness. Leads EU-funded consortia on viral infections and neurologic complications.
