Nigel Ternan

Dr Nigel Ternan is a Senior Lecturer in molecular microbiology at the School of Biomedical Sciences, Ulster University. He holds a BSc (Hons) in Microbiology from Queen’s University Belfast and a PhD in microbial biodegradation from Queen’s University. With over 20 years of research experience, his work focuses on microbial physiology, biotechnology, and systems biology of pathogens like Clostridium difficile. His research has secured over £700,000 in funding from UK EPSRC, Invest NI, and the EU.

Dr Ternan has published over 30 articles in peer-reviewed journals (H-index 14) and holds UK/EU patents in microbial diagnostics. His lab combines proteomics, transcriptomics, and reverse genetics to identify therapeutic targets for pathogens. Collaborative projects include developing biocides for healthcare, high-yield bioreactors for food industries, and cross-disciplinary pathogen detection methods with healthcare trusts and SMEs.

Teaching responsibilities include microbiology, biochemistry, and genomics, alongside employability mentoring for Biology/Biomedical Sciences students. Administrative roles include module coordination for multiple courses and membership in faculty study abroad and employability committees.
