Nigel Mackman

Nigel Mackman, PhD is the John Parker Distinguished Professor of Hematology at the UNC School of Medicine, where he holds secondary appointments in Pharmacology. As a member of the Lineberger Comprehensive Cancer Center, his research bridges hematology, inflammation, and cancer biology.

• Research Focus: Mechanisms of hemostasis/thrombosis, coagulation-inflammation crosstalk, tissue factor (TF) biology, protease-activated receptors (PARs), and microvesicle (MV) dynamics in diseases like ischemia-reperfusion injury, cancer, sickle cell disease, and viral infections.
• Methodology: Pioneered unique mouse models (e.g., <1% TF expression, TF-floxed lines) and a two-stage FXa generation assay for MV TF activity quantification.
• Clinical Impact: Ongoing work with factor Xa inhibitor rivaroxaban in cardiac remodeling trials (COMMANDER HF) and biomarker discovery for thrombosis risk stratification.

Publications (2015-2023) demonstrate sustained expertise in coagulation cascade interactions with innate immunity, particularly in viral infections (e.g., Coxsackievirus B3, influenza A) and cancer-associated thrombosis. Collaborations with Dr. Khorana have validated MV TF activity as a predictive biomarker.
