University of Illinois Urbana-ChampaignAbout
Nigel Goldenfeld is the Swanlund Endowed Chair Emeritus of Physics and Research Professor at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, affiliated with the Department of Physics and the Institute for Genomic Biology. He leads the Biocomplexity Theme at the Carl R. Woese Institute and directs the NASA Astrobiology Institute for Universal Biology. His research spans condensed matter physics, astrobiology, microbial ecology, and evolutionary dynamics. He holds a Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge (1982) and has been on the UIUC faculty since 1985, with sabbaticals at Stanford and Cambridge.
Research interests include emergent phenomena in physics and biology, such as snowflake growth, material microstructures, fluid dynamics, and microbial ecosystems. He authored a standard statistical mechanics textbook and co-founded NumeriX, a derivatives software company. Awards include Fellowships from the American Physical Society and National Academy of Sciences membership.
- Education: Ph.D., Physics, University of Cambridge (1982)
- Awards: Nordsieck Teaching Award (2002), Sloan Fellowship, University Scholar (1994–1997)
Teaching includes courses on statistical physics and emergent states of matter, with numerous student accolades. His work bridges physics and biology, addressing fundamental questions in astrobiology, microbial evolution, and neural dynamics.
