Nigel Berkeley is a Professor of Local Economic Development and Institute Director at Coventry University, holding roles including Associate Pro Vice-Chancellor (Research) and Senior Research Management Group Affiliate. He leads the Research Centre for Business in Society. With over 30 years of research experience, his expertise spans low carbon policy, industrial policy, and sustainable transport, particularly electric vehicles' role in urban development.
Educated at Coventry University, he earned a Doctorate (2011) and MA, focusing on regional economic development. His research addresses policy frameworks for green automobility, economic opportunities in transport transitions, and barriers to low carbon adoption. He has led 23 research projects and contributed to EU-funded initiatives, Severn Trent Plc impact modeling, and transport policy evaluations.
Publications highlight collaborative governance, competitive advantage in manufacturing, and leadership models for regional partnerships. Media engagements include BBC Radio and Sky News commentaries on carbon emissions and EV policies. He has supervised 27 doctoral students and continues advising postgraduate researchers. His work aligns with UN Sustainable Development Goals, emphasizing climate action and sustainable cities.
Key achievements include leading the UK’s largest low carbon vehicle trial, informing policy debates via House of Commons evidence, and producing 86 research outputs. His vision focuses on policy impact through academic-business-government collaboration, aiming to drive real-world transitions to sustainable transport systems.
