Nicolas Schlecht, PhD, is a Professor of Oncology at the Department of Cancer Prevention and Control, Roswell Park Comprehensive Cancer Center, affiliated with the University at Buffalo. He also holds academic roles as Clinical Associate Professor at Albert Einstein College of Medicine and Adjunct Professor at McGill University’s Faculty of Dentistry. His research focuses on HPV-associated cancers, the human microbiome, and health disparities in cancer epidemiology.
Dr. Schlecht earned his PhD and MSc in Epidemiology & Biostatistics from McGill University (2002 and 1998). He has over 20 years of experience studying HPV epidemiology in underrepresented populations, including cancer survivors and people living with HIV. Current studies investigate HPV vaccine effectiveness, microbiome impacts on cancer risk, and oral HPV infections in immunocompromised individuals.
He co-chairs Roswell Park’s Survivorship Translational Research Group and serves on the National Institute of Minority Health and Health Disparities’ Basic Mechanisms in Cancer Health Disparities Study Section. His work has produced over 120 peer-reviewed publications and an h-index of 35.
Key awards include the Miriam Mandel Faculty Scholar (2003) and Charleston Award (2000). His research bridges molecular biology, population studies, and clinical practice to address cancer prevention and disparities.
