Prof. Dr. Nicolas R. Ziebarth is a professor of economics at the University of Mannheim and head of the Research Unit “Labour Markets and Social Insurance” at ZEW (Centre for European Economic Research). Previously, he served as an associate professor at Cornell University. He holds a PhD in economics from TU Berlin/DIW Berlin (2011), advised by Gert Wagner and Regina Riphahn.
His research focuses on the interplay between social insurance systems, labor markets, and population health, with expertise in the economics of sick leave. His work has influenced policy, including the U.S. Healthy Families Act and FFCRA sick leave provisions, and has been featured in prominent outlets like the New York Times and the Economist.
Award-winning scholar, he ranks among the top 0.2% of young economists globally (RePEc, 2023) and was ranked 12th among German-speaking economists under 40 (Handelsblatt, 2021). His research has been recognized with the 2023 Best Paper Award in the American Journal of Health Economics and the ARIA Early Career Achievement Award.
