Nicolas Monod is a Full Professor at the École Polytechnique Fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) in the School of Basic Sciences (SB), holding the Chair of Ergodic and Geometric Group Theory. He is also affiliated with the Department of Mathematics (MATH) and teaches in the SMA and EDMA programs. His research focuses on geometric group theory, bounded cohomology, topological groups, and ergodic theory, with notable contributions to understanding non-positively curved spaces and group rigidity.
Monod earned his PhD in Mathematics from ETH Zurich (2001), awarded the ETH Medal and Prize. He previously held positions at the University of Chicago as Dickson Instructor and Assistant Professor, and served as Director of the Bernoulli Center at EPFL. His awards include the Berwick Prize (2015), Gauss Lectureship (2016), and an ERC Advanced Grant. He has supervised numerous PhD students, including Viola Federico and Zhao Cunyuan.
- Awards: Gauss Lectureship, Berwick Prize, AMS Fellow, ERC Advanced Grant
- Grants: Multiple Swiss National Science Foundation (SNSF) grants, NSF funding
His research explores foundational questions in group theory and geometry, with a focus on cohomological methods, amenability, and the structure of locally compact groups. He co-authored over 80 publications and has been an invited speaker at numerous international conferences.
