Nicolas Gauthier

Nicolas Gauthier is an Associate Professor and Associate Chair, Graduate Studies, at the University of Waterloo. His research focuses on 19th-century French literature, crime fiction, urban studies, and the history of newspapers fiction.

His work explores how popular and media cultures of the 19th century reflect societal anxieties about modernity. He leads the SSHRC-funded Le Rez-de-chaussée database, cataloging French newspaper fiction (1836–1881).

Nicolas has received multiple awards, including the Arts Excellence in Research Award (2018) and SSHRC Insight Grants. He is affiliated with scholarly organizations like the Association des Professeurs de Français des Universités et Collèges Canadiens (APFUCC) and the Société des Amis d’Alexandre Dumas.
